Begging Burro Mexican Bistro & Tequila Bar

We were here on vacation recently. We love Mexican restaurants, so we decided to try this one. The food was fine (nothing absolutely out of this world) and the drinks were fine, I had two mojitos, and my husband had two beers. We split an entree, our boys had two kids meals (water only for them), and the other family’s appetizer (who was with us) was incorrectly put onto our bill (it was my brother’s family, so we just paid for it instead of raising a stink about it). So, after tip, it was $90 for the 4 of us! Most money I’ve ever spent at a Mexican restaurant, and we weren’t overly impressed. We wouldn’t go there again.

When the begging burro first opened I was very excited to have a Mexican restaurant in town. That first year I wasn't very impressed, but it continues to get better every season. This year the food has been excellent. The atmosphere and service has always been great.

Ordered Burro Brisket. The seasoning that was smeared on the meat detracted from the taste, which was very good once you scraped the seasoning off.The corn-on-the-cob was cold when it was served and needed to be returned. It was roasted when it was returned but had no taste.The cheeses that were under the meat were not warmed and melted. It may well been served on the side.Their daily fresh made salsa was also horrible.Not a great experience...

Ate here, the place is delicious. One of the better Mexican restaurants we have eaten at. Service was great. The waiter very informative and our waters were never empty. Wife had a margarita said it wasn't a pre-mix tasted like they should. You can tell they use fresh ingredients all though out there food. Will be eating here again during our stay.

I love Mexican food and this is probably the best Mexican restaurant I have ever been to. In South Dakota? Weird but so true!!! Highly recommend!

Im not sure if the food was good or not. My family and I were seated for about 15 minutes. We were never asked what we wanted to drink or offered any food.. After being seated no one came back to our table. We read the menu twice knew what we wanted to eat, yet no drinks were offered. we ended up walking out and no one noticed.

On our vacation we wanted some Mexican food so we decided to try the begging burro. The food was delicious. The nachos especially were awesome. We got three different meals and split them five ways. It isn't cheap but it was very tasty.

We stopped in here for dinner as my husband and I are both lovers of authentic Mexican food. This place did not disappoint. The food was amazing, atmosphere so comfortable and the wait staff exceptional. Our waiter, Memo, is one of the best servers I have had in years, not even kidding. We will be back. This place was just amazing on so many levels. I wish they had one closer to Rapid City as we would definitely eat there more often!Great Job Begging Burro.... We will be back for sure!!!

I absolutely loved this place. Our waiter was great and the food was soooooo delicious! I look forward to our next South Dakota trip to eat there again. I only wish I had taken a minute to take pictures of the food, but I was too busy eating!

Nice atmosphere and colorful Spanish flare. Food was alright. Liked the chips, salsa, and guacamole, but the veggie tacos were not that great. Friendly and very fast service but the prices were kinda on the high side.

Delicious meal in a beautiful, airy environment. Best fish tacos I've ever had. Friendly and competent service from Alfredo. Margaritas were potent and chips were plentiful. I highly recommend it!

In downtown Custer SD, we met friends for lunch during Sturgis Bike Week. All had enjoyable meals, our taco salads were HUGE with loads of shredded meats of our choice. Hard wooden chairs made a lengthy otherwise enjoyable visit with friends a little tough to take.

The service here was wonderful. I was in the mood for Mexican, but I typically like American Mexican Food (ground beef for tacos vs sliced steak), so I didn't eat Mexican but there Buffalo Wings were "da bomb!" The rest of my family loved their dishes.

Excellent tasting food well prepared and presented. Lots of interesting menu options with unique recipes. Very friendly and attentive service. A tad pricey but worth it. Would definitely visit again.

Delicious food served and prepared by a quick, friendly and efficient staff. We dined here at the height of the Black Hills Motorcycle Rally and did not have to wait. Truly authentic Mexican cuisine.

I have been to a lot of Mexican restaurants, but this was something special. It was not too spicy, but the flavors were incredible. We had amazing service and the prices were reasonable for the area.

Stopped in for lunch. Had the beef burrito, chips, salsa and jalepeno sauce. All were very tasty! Food was served quickly and the hostess and waitress were very polite and accommodating!

It rarely leave a negative review, but this is the closest I've come in a long time. I give it 3 stars only because the service and environment was great. The food is both expensive (by Mexican food standards: entre's start at 13.99 and kids meals start at 9) and lackluster. The chips were bland, the salsa seemed like canned tomatoes, and the refried beans were like soup. The chicken enchiladas were just ok.Great servers and environment, but overpriced and undergratifying food. But since most places in Custer close at 8... The Begging Burro may be one of your only options.

Food was amazing! Gourmet quality dishes! Look to spend around $18-$20 per meal on average though.

Hands down the best Mexican food we have ever had. The food was very authentic and not just your typical burritos, enchiladas, and fajitas. All eight of us agreed that this was the best Mexican food we have ever have. Good service, great food, different menu options, and a very reasonable price. If I could give more than 5 stars I would!!

We love Beggin’ Burro. They have a wide variety of menu items that never disappoint. Would love it if they brought elote back though. :)

Service was the worst. We had 5 people in the group and was told 15 min wait. 15 minutes past and there was open table waiting to be cleaned and they claimed they were short staffed and had to wait to be seated on the same table. Oncewe got a the table our waiter got the order. Apple juice with ice? 2 draft beer that was awful and then they forgot chocolate milk. We got the milk towards the end of our meal.. with ICE!! Who puts ice in milk? They offered to give the milk for free because of the terrible service. But guess what they didnt take that out of receipt.

My fiance and I visited in June to celebrate our engagement. While I can't recall the specifics of our meal, our visit was not unpleasant. However, we were so exhausted after a day of hiking to the top of Black Elk Peak, we accidentally left my fiance's new fleece jacket behind at our table when we left. As soon as we realized our mistake, we began contacting the Begging Burro to make arrangements for it's return. We were told we would be contacted with information by the manager. To date, I have contacted or attempted to contact the Begging Burro over 17 times. Each time we are told we will be contacted soon. Most recently, we were told to send a prepaid shipping package for the return of our property. It was sent back empty, and ownership will still not respond to our inquiries. We are disappointed, to say the least, and will not hesitate to recommend against this business to our family and friends.

By far this was the best restaurant that we dined in. The food was absolutely delicious! They adjusted the level of hotness and advised before you ordered if something was very spicy! The place is beautiful and the staff were very helpful! We loved it!!

Wife and I just had dinner here. The food was REALLY good. The drinks very reasonably priced and service from Oscar was exceptional. Well done guys...muy bien!!!

The atmosphere was welcoming and food was really delicious! Yet it was a little overpriced. Service was nice! There were some flies flying around though.. I would come again.

The ambience was nice, very spacious. We were greeted right away by Alfredo, who ended up being our server. He was very friendly and his enthusiasm for describing the food was spot on. The food is made fresh, and very flavorful. One of the best restaurants in Custer. Definitely stop here while you are in Custer.

Food was very good. Meal came with chips and salsa. I had the fish tacos which came with a large piece of halibut. Service was quick and friendly. Atmosphere was upbeat and fun, yet still felt cozy.

Incredible food. Try the Chile Nogada and the Firery Margarita. You won't be disappointed.

I don’t even know where to begin how good this place is- amazing food and extremely friendly service; they get even the smallest needs right. They went over the top to make sure we had enough drink, needed more salsa, or needed a new napkin. Starting with the food; wow-wie! It is very very good, some of the best Mexican food I’ve had, coming from a traveler who has visited Mexico 24 times. Overall an amazing place to dine in, great experience, will come back the next time I visit South Dakota. 👍🏻

We are on a motorcycle trip from Chicago for Sturgis rally. We are staying in Cluster and this place is 3 minutes from the home we rented. The atmosphere is nice. The decor, the staff are nice and the food was very flavorful and delicious

We kept seeing so many people eating there. Their food looked good so we finally stopped. Glad we did. Very good food, nice drinks. The meats were all well prepared and tasty, the beef, the pork and the chicken. Also s nice variety of sauces. What makes them unique is their collection of tequila and all the flights that they serve, both vertical and horizontal. Well worth the stop.

We visited the Begging Burro Mexican Bistro on a recent trip to the Black Hills. We didn't really have a plan beforehand, but this was one of the few places in town that had food my wife could eat. It's nice that the menu clearly labels which dishes are gluten free and which aren't. Our server was extremely friendly and the food was delicious. We would definitely eat here again in the future.

Really great Mexican food in a spacious bistro. Everything—from the chips and salsa, to the drinks, to the tacos—was excellent. But it was the service that really stood out. Our server Josh was probably one of the friendliest waiters I’ve ever had. All in all would highly recommend if you’re in Custer!

Excellent food and service. Very unique. I had 3 pork tacos with roasted pineapple, caramelized onions queso, etc. My husband had Pork Burrito. He especially loved the green tomatillo salsa. We shared the lime cake with cream.

This was our first meal in Custer and we left full and happy. The service is excellent and fast and the food is delicious. They offer a wide variety of interesting drinks.

Our server , Carla, was great! The atmosphere was very good and the restaurant was clean. The food was pretty good but we have had better.

Very tasty Mexican food in a small town can be hard to find outside of a few select states near the border. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality here, but they are afraid of spice! The salsa and pico were not at all spicy and the spicy margarita was barely warm. I asked them to muddle a jalapeno in my second drink to help with the heat, but they did not. It was easy to order gluten free here, and the menu has great descriptions on it to help out with dietary needs. The staff is very friendly and overall the atmosphere was fun and exciting with several large groups dining and a full bar available.

My husband and I were looking for a spot to grab an early dinner after spending the day doing touristy things. We didn't want burgers so we decided to try this place. Holy moly. We absolutely loved it. They have a lot of great classic items on the menu but also have some not typical items. I got their nachos which were mind-blowing. Definitely not one note - there were so many fantastic flavors. My husband got burro brisket & it was SO TENDER and amazingly flavorful. Their salsa was sweeter than I'm used to but was still tasty. Chips were fresh and delicious. Our waitress was so kind and we got our food pretty fast! I think the price point is good for the quality of food. If you're in town, you have to try this place!
